Prayer for the Sick:

How to Intercede

for Someone Who Is Ill When someone you love is sick, you want to do something. You bring food, you sit with them, you research treatments. And then — when you’ve done what you can — you pray. Praying for the sick is one of the oldest practices in the Christian faith and one of the most direct expressions of love. Here’s how to do it with intention, specificity, and honest faith. — The Biblical Call to Pray for the Sick > “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well.” > — James 5:14-15 > “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” > — James 5:16 The language here is direct: prayer for the sick is powerful and effective. Not a formality — a genuine intervention. — What to Pray For (Specifically) Generic prayer (“God, heal them”) is a start. But specific prayer is more honest and more focused: Healing of the specific condition — name the diagnosis Wisdom for the medical team — doctors making treatment decisions Pain management and comfort — the immediate suffering Peace and freedom from fear — what illness does to the mind Strength for the caregiver or family — the ones sustaining them Clarity about next steps — when decisions are unclear Hope — the sustaining belief that this is not the end — Ready-to-Use Prayers for the Sick A General Intercession Prayer “God, I’m bringing [name] to you. You know their diagnosis, their pain, and what this illness is costing them. I’m asking you to work in their body — specifically in [the condition] — in the way only you can. Give their doctors and medical team extraordinary wisdom. Guide every decision made on their behalf. In the meantime, give [name] peace. The fear that comes with illness can be as exhausting as the illness itself. Let them feel your presence in the hospital room, at home, in the quiet hours. Bring them through this. Amen.” — When the Illness Is Serious “God, [name]’s situation is serious and I’m not going to minimize it. I’m asking for your direct intervention — healing that goes beyond what medicine can provide. I believe you can do this.
