A prayer for postpartum depression — for new mothers who are struggling with darkness instead of joy. These prayers are for one of the most difficult and most misunderstood seasons of life.

Postpartum depression affects approximately 1 in 5 new mothers. It is not a character flaw. It is not evidence that you don’t love your baby. It is not a sign that you are failing. It is a medical condition — a profound hormonal and neurological disruption — that requires support, not shame.

If you are here, you are brave for still looking for something to hold onto. These prayers are for you.

Prayer for Postpartum Depression

Lord, I am not okay. I thought I would feel joy, and instead I feel empty — or sad, or numb, or terrified, or all of those at once. And the guilt about not feeling what I’m “supposed to feel” makes everything worse.

I need You to be with me in this. Not in the way I expected new motherhood to feel, but in the way it actually feels — dark, confusing, and not what I imagined.

You are not disappointed in me. Remind me of that when the shame gets loud. You see a mother who is suffering, not a mother who is failing.

Help me get the support I need — medical, relational, practical. And be close in the waiting. Don’t let me disappear into this alone.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3

Prayer for a Mother Struggling to Bond

God, I love my baby — I know I do — but the connection I expected to feel immediately isn’t there yet, and I’m scared. I keep waiting to feel what everyone else seems to feel, and the waiting is exhausting.

Don’t let me believe that this means I’m a bad mother. Bonding can take time, especially when your body and mind are under the weight of what I’m carrying right now.

Help me seek help without shame. Surround me with people who understand and won’t minimize this. Protect my baby and me as we find our way through this season together.

I am not alone. You are here.

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” — Deuteronomy 31:8
