A prayer for forgiveness — for the things you’ve done wrong, the things you can’t undo, and the guilt that keeps you stuck. Forgiveness is the bridge between regret and freedom, between shame and peace. Whether you need to receive God’s forgiveness, forgive yourself, or forgive someone who hurt you, prayer is the starting point.
A Prayer for God’s Forgiveness
Lord, I’ve messed up. I know it and You know it. I’ve done things I’m not proud of — said things I shouldn’t have, hurt people I care about, made choices I regret.
I’m sorry. Not just because I got caught or because there were consequences, but because I genuinely want to do better. Please forgive me. Wash this guilt off me and help me start fresh.
I don’t want to carry this anymore. Thank You for grace I don’t deserve but desperately need.
Amen.
A Prayer for Forgiving Myself
God, I know You’ve forgiven me, but I’m having trouble forgiving myself. The memory of what I did keeps replaying and I can’t seem to let it go.
Please help me accept Your forgiveness as real. If You’re not holding it against me anymore, I shouldn’t either. Help me learn from my mistakes without letting them define who I am.
I’m not the worst thing I’ve ever done. Help me believe that.
Amen.

What the Bible Says About Forgiveness
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9
Confess, and God forgives. He is “faithful and just” — meaning it’s not just merciful for Him to forgive; it’s right.
“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” — Psalm 103:12
East and west never meet. This is the distance between you and your forgiven sins. God doesn’t just forgive — He removes.
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” — Ephesians 4:32
We forgive because we’ve been forgiven. It’s the natural response to receiving grace.
Steps Toward Forgiveness
– Acknowledge what you did. Don’t minimize it. Own it fully.
– Confess it to God. Bring it into the light. He already knows, but confession is agreeing with Him about it.
– Accept His forgiveness. Believe that God’s forgiveness is real and complete.
– Stop rehearsing it. Every time the memory comes up, remind yourself: “God has forgiven me. I don’t need to carry this anymore.”
