Forgiveness is at the heart of the Christian faith — and one of the hardest things we are called to do. Whether you need to receive God’s forgiveness for something you’ve done, or you’re struggling to forgive someone who has hurt you, prayer is the place to start.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 (NIV)
These prayers for forgiveness are for both sides of that equation: receiving grace and extending it.
Prayers for Receiving God’s Forgiveness
1. A Prayer of Confession and Repentance
Lord, I come before You with a humble heart. I have sinned — in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. I am not making excuses. I am asking for Your mercy. You are faithful and just to forgive when I confess. So I confess now, honestly and completely. Wash me clean. Restore what sin has broken. Thank You for the cross, where my forgiveness was already paid for. Amen.
2. A Prayer When You Can’t Forgive Yourself
Father, I have accepted Your forgiveness in my head, but I can’t seem to receive it in my heart. I keep rehearsing my failures. I keep punishing myself for what You have already forgiven. Help me to believe that Your grace really is sufficient — even for this. If the cross is enough, then it is enough for me. Help me stop holding against myself what You have already removed as far as the east is from the west. Amen.
