Depression doesn’t look the same for everyone. Sometimes it’s the inability to get out of bed. Sometimes it’s going through the motions while feeling completely hollow inside. Sometimes it’s a sadness you can’t explain to anyone, not even yourself.

If you’re in that place right now, you don’t need to perform for God. You don’t need to dress up your words or pretend you’re okay. What you need is permission to come as you are — broken, exhausted, empty — and trust that he meets you there.

Psalm 34:18 says: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Not far from. Not waiting for you to improve. Close. That’s the promise.

What Depression Tells You (And What God Says Back)

Depression has a voice. It says things like:

You’re a burden.
Nothing will ever change.
God doesn’t see you or doesn’t care.

Every one of those is a lie. Not a comfortable thing to say, but worth saying: the voice of depression is not the voice of truth. The Bible speaks directly against each of those lies — Jeremiah 29:11, Romans 8:38-39, Psalm 139:7-10.

Prayer isn’t a magic cure for depression. But it is a way to push back against the isolation that depression thrives on. It’s choosing to stay connected to God even when you can’t feel him.

A Prayer for When Depression Weighs You Down

God, I’m struggling. I don’t have the energy to explain everything — I think you already know. I feel far from you, far from myself, far from any hope that this will get better. I don’t ask you to fix everything right now. I just ask that you be near me. Remind me that you see me in this darkness. I’m not asking for strength I don’t have. I’m just asking you to hold me while I find my footing again. Amen.

A Prayer for Hope When You Can’t Feel It

Lord, hope feels impossibly far right now. Every day feels the same. I’m tired of fighting something I can’t even fully name. But your Word says you have plans for me — plans for a future. Help me hold onto that, even loosely. Help me take one more step, pray one more prayer, ask for help from one more person. I choose to believe you are working even in what I cannot see. Amen.

You Don’t Have to Face This Alone
