The racing heart. The chest tightening. The sense that something is terribly wrong even when nothing specific has happened. Anxiety attacks can come out of nowhere, and they are frightening.
If you're prone to anxiety attacks—or you're reading this in the middle of one right now—here's the first thing to know: You are not losing your mind. You are not broken. And you are not alone.
God's Word speaks directly to the kind of fear that hijacks your body before your mind can catch up.
> "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." > — Philippians 4:6–7

Praying During an Anxiety Attack: Is It Even Possible?
When anxiety spikes, cognitive function narrows. You may not be able to form complete thoughts, let alone a structured prayer.
That's okay.
A prayer during an anxiety attack doesn't need to be theological or polished. It can be one word—"Jesus." It can be a breath prayer—"You are here. I am safe." It can be nothing but holding your hand over your heart and saying "God, I need You."
The Spirit prays for us when we can't (Romans 8:26). You don't have to perform. You just have to reach.

A Grounding Prayer for an Anxiety Attack
If you can, read this slowly. If you can't focus on reading, just breathe through it:
—
God,
My body is alarming right now, and I'm scared.
I'm asking You to meet me in this moment—not when it passes, but right now, in the middle of it.
Help me to breathe. Help my nervous system to slow. Remind my body that I am not in danger—that the threat my brain is sending signals about is not real.
Hold me. Let Your presence be something I can feel, not just something I know in theory.
You have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind. I receive that right now, even if I can't feel it yet. I declare it over myself because Your Word says it is true.
Let this pass. And while it does—be near.
Amen.

Short Anchor Prayers for Anxiety Attacks
These are designed to be memorized—so you can reach for them when rational thought is hard:
Breath prayer (inhale/exhale slowly):
- In: "You are with me."
- Out: "I am not alone."
One-word prayer: "Jesus." (That's enough.)
5-4-3-2-1 grounding with prayer: As you name 5 things you can see, say: "God is here." As you name 4 things you can touch, say: "I am safe." As you name 3 things you can hear, say: "This will pass." As you name 2 things you can smell, say: "You hold me." As you take 1 slow breath, say: "Thank You."

Scripture for Anxiety and Panic
These passages are not platitudes—they were written by people who understood real fear:
2 Timothy 1:7 "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you."
Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God."
John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
Matthew 6:34 "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself."

After the Anxiety Attack: What to Pray
Once the wave passes, there's often a secondary feeling—shame, exhaustion, or frustration with yourself. Bring that to God too:
"Lord, I'm tired. That was hard. Thank You for getting me through it. Help me not to be ashamed of what my body just did—it was trying to protect me, even if it misread the situation.
Teach me how to build a life where anxiety has less grip on me. And on the days it still comes—be close."

Building a Daily Practice That Reduces Anxiety Over Time
One of the most effective things you can do for anxiety is build a consistent prayer practice—not because prayer is a magic fix, but because it literally rewires how your brain responds to stress.
Regular prayer activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" system), lowers cortisol, and builds the habit of turning toward God before anxiety escalates.
Say a Little Prayer is designed to help you build exactly this kind of practice. The app generates personalized, conversational prayers based on what you're carrying that day—including anxiety, panic, and overwhelm.

You Are Not Defined by Your Anxiety
Anxiety attacks can feel humiliating, especially when they happen without an obvious trigger. They are not a sign of weak faith. They are not punishment. They are a medical reality that millions of people—including deeply faithful people—deal with every day.
God meets you in your biology, not just your beliefs.
You are held, even when it doesn't feel that way. Especially then.
