There Is No Fear Like a Parent’s Fear
When your child is sick, something primal kicks in. Every parenting instinct says: fix this, take this from them, make it stop. And when you can’t — when the illness is serious or the diagnosis is uncertain or the treatment is hard — that helplessness is crushing.
Parents throughout history have brought their sick children to Jesus. It’s one of the most consistent themes in the Gospels. Jairus’s daughter. The Syrophoenician woman’s daughter. The father’s demon-possessed boy. Every one of them came to Jesus in desperation: My child is suffering. Can You help?
That prayer — simple, desperate, from a parent’s heart — is one of the most heard prayers in Scripture. And it is heard today too.
What Scripture Says When Your Child Is Sick
Mark 5:22-23 records Jairus falling at Jesus’s feet and pleading: “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” No theology. No complex prayer. Just a parent on his knees saying: please help my daughter.
Jesus went with him. He goes with you too.
Isaiah 40:11 describes God with tender, parental imagery: “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.” God knows what it is to be tender toward the vulnerable. He holds your child the way you want to — even more gently than you can.
Matthew 18:10 is a stunning verse about children: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” Your child has angels whose gaze is fixed on the Father. They are not unattended in their suffering.
Psalm 121:7-8 is a watchman promise: “The Lord will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” This is a promise you can place over your child when they sleep.

A Prayer for a Sick Child
God,
My child is sick and I’m scared.
Every parent instinct I have wants to fix this and I can’t.So I’m bringing [name/”my child”] to You — the way Jairus brought his daughter, the way that father brought his boy.
Broken, desperate, just asking You to help.Heal them, Lord. Heal their body completely. Let this illness be short. Let it leave no lasting damage. Let them be fully well.
Guide every doctor and nurse caring for them. Give wisdom to everyone making decisions about their treatment. Let the right things work.
Be with them in their fear. Children don’t understand why they’re sick, why they’re in pain, why the normal rhythms of life have been disrupted. Let them feel safe — with me, and with You.
Give me the strength to be what they need right now. When I’m exhausted. When I’m scared. When I don’t know what to say. Help me be present with them even in the not-knowing.
I trust You with this child You gave me.
They are Yours before they are mine.
Amen.
A Prayer for a Child with a Serious or Chronic Illness
Lord,
This is not a short sickness. This is a long road.
My child has been suffering for [a long time] and we are all weary.I’ve prayed so many times. I’ve believed. I’ve asked others to believe with me. And yet here we still are.
I don’t understand why. I won’t pretend I do.
But I will not stop praying, because I don’t know what else to do.Give my child joy in the midst of this. Let them not be defined by their illness. Help them — even as a child — find moments of laughter, friendship, wonder, and beauty despite the hard things.
Give us as a family what we need for this long road. Connect us with others who understand. Guard our marriage, if applicable, under the strain of caregiving. Help us not to lose each other while caring for [name].
And, God — please heal them. Still. I haven’t stopped asking. I won’t stop asking.
Amen.

Prayer before a child’s surgery or procedure
Lord, guide the surgeon’s hands. Let the anesthesia work perfectly. Let there be no complications. Watch over my child while they are in that room where I cannot follow, and bring them back to me whole. Amen.
Prayer at the hospital bedside
God, I’m sitting here and I feel so helpless. Be here with us. Fill this room with Your presence. Let my child know they are not alone. Hold both of us right now. Amen.
Prayer for a child in pain
Lord, my child is in pain and I can’t take it away. Please relieve their suffering. Let the medication work. Let them find moments of relief. Heal whatever is causing this. I hate seeing them hurt. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions About Prayer for a Sick Child
How do I pray for my child’s healing without losing faith if they don’t get better?
Pray honestly and hold your requests in open hands. Ask boldly for healing — Jairus did, the Syrophoenician woman did, the father with the demon-possessed boy did. God invites that kind of desperate, specific asking. At the same time, hold the outcome with trust: “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief” (Mark 9:24) is one of the most honest prayers in Scripture. Faith doesn’t require certainty about the outcome. It requires trust in the character of the One you’re asking.
Should I tell my child that I’m praying for them?
Yes, for most ages. Children can be deeply comforted by knowing that their parents and others are praying for them — that God is involved in their healing. Even young children can understand “I’m asking God to make you feel better.” Involving older children in their own healing prayer can also give them a sense of agency and connection with God in a difficult time.
What if my child asks why God is letting them be sick?
Be honest that you don’t fully know. You can say: “I don’t know why you’re sick. I don’t understand everything God does. But I know He loves you very much, and I know He’s with you right now. And we’re going to ask Him together to help you get better.” Children often handle honest uncertainty better than adults expect.

You Are Not Alone at That Bedside
Whatever room your child is in right now — hospital room, sick bed at home, doctor’s office — God is there. He is not distant from the suffering of children. He wept at Lazarus’s tomb. He called the children to come to Him when the disciples tried to send them away. He gathered them in his arms.
He is gathered around yours right now. And so is the prayer of everyone who reads this and prays with you.
