How to Pray

the Lord’s Prayer: A Line-by-Line Guide The Lord’s Prayer is probably the most repeated prayer in human history. Millions say it every Sunday. But repetition and understanding are not the same thing — and Jesus didn’t give this prayer as a liturgical script to recite. He gave it as a template for how to pray. > “This, then, is how you should pray…” > — Matthew 6:9 Not “say these exact words” — this is how. The Lord’s Prayer is a structure, a model, a shape for prayer. Understanding what each line means transforms it from rote recitation into a genuine conversation. — The Full Text (Matthew 6:9-13, NIV) “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” — Line by Line “Our Father in heaven” The prayer opens with relationship, not formality. Father — not Lord, not Almighty, not Creator. The word Jesus uses is the Aramaic Abba — an intimate family term, closer to “Dad” than to a formal title. Our — not “my.” You’re praying as part of a community, not as a lone individual making personal requests. In heaven — a reminder that this Father is not limited by your circumstances. He sees the whole picture. How to pray it: Approach God as a known, trusted parent. Not a distant deity who needs to be appeased, but a Father who is already inclined toward you. — “Hallowed be your name” Hallowed means set apart, honored, treated as holy. This is an act of worship before petition — a deliberate reorientation toward who God is before you get to what you need. How to pray it: Spend a moment here in actual worship. Not rushing through it to get to requests. What is true about God? Say it back to him. His goodness, faithfulness, power, love. — “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” This is surrender before petition. You’re asking that God’s agenda — not yours — be the driving force of your life and the world. On earth as it is in heaven — in heaven, God’s will is done immediately, completely, joyfully. This is a prayer for that reality to break into the present.
