A prayer for the dying — for the ones standing at the bedside, not knowing what to say, unsure whether to speak or just hold a hand. These prayers are for those final vigils, those long goodbye hours, and for anyone facing the end of their own life.
Death is the one thing we all share and none of us are ready for. But God is present there too — especially there.
A Prayer for Someone Who Is Dying
Lord, I bring You someone I love. They are at the edge of this life and I don’t know what to do with that. I don’t know how to hold the grief and the hope at the same time, how to pray for healing and also for peace, how to say goodbye when I don’t want to let go.
Be with them where I cannot reach. When they are afraid, hold them. When they are in pain, comfort them in ways that medicine cannot. And when the time comes, let them cross over without terror — into Your arms, into the light that scripture promises waits on the other side.
Give me the strength to be present with them now. To say the things that need to be said. To hold the silence when words aren’t enough. Let my love for them be the last thing they feel before Your love becomes everything.
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” — Psalm 23:4
A Prayer for Peace at the End of Life
God, I’m facing the end of my life — or it feels that way. And I need You to be real to me right now in a way I’ve never needed before.
I have questions I know won’t be answered this side of eternity. I have regrets I’m asking You to cover with Your grace. I have people I love that I’m not ready to leave.
But I also know what Your Word says: that nothing — not death, not life, not anything in all creation — can separate me from Your love. I’m choosing to believe that right now. Not because I’m fearless, but because I’m holding onto what I know when what I feel is overwhelming.
Meet me in this room. Be my peace when my body is failing. Let the end of this life be a beginning I couldn’t have imagined, held by a love I’ve only glimpsed.
“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” — John 11:25
