A prayer for grief at Christmas — for when the most wonderful time of the year is also the hardest. These prayers are for anyone carrying loss into the holiday season.

Christmas amplifies everything. Joy becomes more joyful, and grief becomes more heavy. The gap left by someone who is no longer here is made visible by the traditions you shared, the seat that’s empty, the ornament that was theirs.

Grief at Christmas is real and it is common, and it does not mean you are broken or that you can’t participate in the season. It means you loved someone, and they are gone. These prayers are for navigating both of those truths at once.

Prayer for Grief During the Holidays

Lord, Christmas is here, and so is the grief. The two are sitting side by side and I don’t know how to hold them both.

I miss the person who is gone. I miss what Christmas used to feel like. I miss the version of myself who could enjoy this without a shadow.

I’m not asking You to take the grief away. I’m asking You to be with me in it. To make room at the table for someone who is both celebrating and mourning. To let me love the people who are here while still feeling the absence of the one who isn’t.

Help me give myself permission to feel this. And remind me that Your presence at Christmas was itself about entering into the darkness of human experience.

“He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.” — Isaiah 53:3

Prayer When You’re Dreading Christmas Because of Grief

God, I’m dreading the holidays this year. The buildup, the expectations, the way everyone else seems to be in the spirit — it highlights how different I feel. I don’t want to be a shadow at the celebration, but I also can’t pretend to be fine.

Give me the grace to show up as I actually am. To participate without performing. To let the people who love me actually see me, grief and all.

And hold me through the specific hard moments — the family dinner, the songs, the traditions that remind me most sharply of who is missing.

You are the God of comfort. I need that more than I need the decorations to look right.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4
