Prayer for the New Year: Starting January with God

Prayer for the New Year

Lord, a new year is beginning. I don’t know what it holds. I don’t know what will be hard, what will surprise me, what I’ll be grateful for this time next year. But I know You hold it.

I don’t want to enter this year clutching my own plans and asking You to bless them. I want to enter it with open hands — ready to follow where You lead, even when the direction is unexpected.

Take this year. My time, my ambitions, my fears about what might happen. I give them to You. Make this a year of deeper faith, deeper trust, and closer proximity to who You are.

Whatever comes — let me face it with You.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” — Jeremiah 29:11

Prayer for the New Year After a Hard Previous Year

God, last year was difficult. Not all of it — but enough of it that I’m entering this new year carrying some wounds, some disappointments, and some weariness that didn’t resolve when the calendar changed.

I bring all of that to You now. The things that broke. The hopes that didn’t materialize. The ways I fell short of who I wanted to be. I’m releasing them as last year’s story — finished, closed, laid down.

Give me grace to begin again. Genuine hope, not performance. Renewed faith in what You can do in twelve months. I want this year to be different, and I know that starts with You, not with me.
