A prayer for retirement — for the transition from decades of work to a new chapter of rest, purpose, and service. Honest prayers for identity, meaning, and making the most of this gift of time.
A Prayer for Retirement
Lord, I’ve worked for decades and now it’s time to step back. Part of me is thrilled — no more alarm clocks, no more commutes, no more deadlines. But another part is scared. Who am I without my career? What do I do with all this time?
Please give me purpose in this new season. Let it be more than just rest — let it be a time of service, of relationships, of the things I’ve put off for too long. Show me how to use this gift of time for Your glory.
My identity isn’t in my job. It’s in You. Help me remember that every day.
Amen.
A Prayer for When Retirement Feels Empty
God, I thought I’d love this. But the truth is, I’m bored and I feel useless. The days blur together and I miss the structure and the sense of contributing that work gave me.
Please fill this season with meaning. Give me opportunities to serve, to mentor, to pour into the next generation. Let my retirement be a launchpad for the things You’ve been preparing me for all along.
I still have so much to give. Show me where.
Amen.

Why This Prayer Matters
Prayer isn’t about getting the words perfect — it’s about showing up honestly. Whether you’re facing this situation for the first time or the hundredth time, bringing it to God changes something in you. It shifts the weight from your shoulders to His. Use this prayer as a starting point, then let your own words flow from there.
