A prayer for children — for the parents who love their kids more than words can say and worry about them even more. From the moment you held your child for the first time, your heart walked around outside your body. Prayer is the most powerful thing you can do for your children.

A Prayer for My Children

Lord, they’re Yours before they’re mine. I know that intellectually, but some days I act like they’re my project to manage and control. Please remind me that my job is to love them, guide them, and then let them go into Your hands.

Protect them from the things I can’t see — the influences, the dangers, the heartbreaks that are coming. Give them a faith that’s their own, not just something they inherited from me.

Let them know how loved they are — by me, and infinitely more, by You.

Amen.

A Prayer for When I’m Worried About My Kids

God, I’m scared for them. The world is not kind and I can’t shield them from everything. They’re going to make mistakes, get hurt, and face things I never had to deal with at their age.

Please be with them when I’m not. Surround them with good friends, wise mentors, and a sense of right and wrong that holds steady when the pressure comes.

And please — give me peace. I can’t parent well from a place of constant anxiety.

Amen.

What the Bible Says About Children

“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” — Psalm 127:3

Children are not a burden — they are a gift. This perspective changes everything about how you parent.

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” — Proverbs 22:6

The foundation you lay in your children’s early years will shape their entire lives.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” — Matthew 19:14

Jesus welcomed children when His disciples tried to keep them away. Your prayers bring your children into His presence.

Praying With Your Children

Start early. Even toddlers can learn to say “thank You, God.” Keep it simple and joyful.
Make it a routine. Bedtime or mealtime prayer — pick a time and stick with it.
Let them lead. As they grow, let them pray out loud. Their prayers will be honest and surprisingly deep.
Pray for them out loud. Let your children hear you praying for them. It reassures them and models what prayer looks like.
